Valerian root is a nervine. It is often used when there is muscle or joint discomfort. Valerian root can also be used in times of restlessness, inability to focus and sleeplessness.

Considerations: About 10% of the population experience a energizing effect from valerian.

Dried roots can be used for decoctions and tinctures. Roots should be steeped for longer periods of time (up to a few hours) than leaf and flower herbs. Store dried roots in an air tight container, away from moisture and light.
